Some Diet Suggestions for Dialysis Patients

2013-02-19 17:05

Diet Suggestions for Dialysis Dialysis patients should keep a reasonable and appropriate diet, compared with those patients who have not experienced dialysis, there has a little difference on diet for dialysis patients.

For dialysis patients, the protein intake increases obviously to make up the protein loss in dialysis and meet the daily need, and it even exceeds the healthy people’s acceptable daily intake. Patients on hemodialysis should take 1.0-1.2g/(kg.d) proteins, while patients on peritoneal dialysis should take 1.2-1.5g/(kg.d). Dialysis patients should choose the high quality animal protein. Though soybean and peanut contain high level of proteins, it is non-essential amino acid-based and also contains high level of phosphorus, so dialysis patients should not eat more plant proteins.

The rice and flour in every meal had better been controlled into about 100g, if patients still feel hungry, they can eat potatoes, tomatoes, vegetables to increase the energy intake and supply nutrition. Generally speaking, fruits are not forbidden for dialysis patients who still have much urine output, especially for peritoneal dialysis patients. Dialysis can eliminate the potassium in the body, if low-potassium always happens, then patients are encouraged to eat more oranges. If dialysis patients have already had no urine output, then the foods containing potassium should be limited strictly.

Hemodialysis patients with no urine output limit the water intake and keep a low-salt diet, the increase in body weight should not exceed 1kg/d on the non-dialysis days; for peritoneal dialysis patients, they don’t need to have these limits if the urine output is nearly normal. Most patients with End Stage Renal Disease have low level of serum calcium, then they should supply calcium carbonate and active vitamin D3.

Though dialysis is necessary sometimes, to some extent, dialysis discounts the quality of life, and more and more patients decide to stop dialysis. However, if the kidney function can be enhanced to about 20, dialysis is likely to be stopped.
