One Can Detect FSGS from Its Symptoms

2012-09-15 17:52

FSGS, also known as Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis, describes a scar tissue that forms in one of the most vital parts of filtering system in kidneys called glomeruli. Our glomeruli work as filtering and removing wastes, toxins and excess fluids from blood. Once those glomeruli no longer function well, harmful substances fail to be eliminated accounting for various symptoms.

More often than not, no symptoms presents initially in patients with Focal Segmental Glomerulosclerosis. However, due to the disease causes scar tissues on glomeruli, protein appears in urine over time. That’s why foamy or bubbly urine would develop. Massive protein leakage shows up in urine account for edema and low levels of protein. Be more exact, the edema is induced by low levels of protein, which explains why plasma colloid osmotic pressure drops accordingly. Consequently, fluids enter into tissue space from blood vessels. Other than this, high salt diet aggravates illness condition if patients fail to be educated before.

Other major symptoms of FSGS are:

Poor appetite

It is said that poor appetite may be induced by uremia in patients with FSGS. Some may doubt its realness, but to be honest, it does. FSGS would lead to ESRD or uremia which triggers loss of appetite. Scary, isn’t it? Actually, not just Focal Segmental Glomerulonesclerosis but many other kidney problems could all result in uremia. That’s why patients with the disease often suffer from poor appetite.

Weight gain

Weight gain often results from steroid or your edema. The application of steroids or serious swelling contributes to body weight, which usually happens in patients with FSGS. Once the medication is no need to take, unexplained weight gain would lose accordingly. No need to worry. Only long-standing weight gain even without steroids exists, further treatments would be needed.
