What Are the Clinical Symptoms of IgA Nephropathy

2012-11-26 17:09

IgA Nephropathy attacks frequently in teenagers, more male than female patients. By detecting its clinical symptoms, we could better realize the disease. So, what are the clinical symptoms of Berger’s Disease?

Hematuria attacks almost in all patients with IgA Nephropathy. Infections, especially respiratory infections, often attack before its onset. Typically, the patients would develop sudden blood in urine after 24-72 hours of infections. The hematuria can last several hours or even days. The blood in urine in IgA Nephropathy patients is characterized by frequent relapse. Once it attacks, backache, low fever and general malaise etc. might appear. 60-70% of IgA Nephropathy cases cause simple hematuria in clinic.

10-15% of Berger’s Disease patients experience hematuria, proteinuria, high blood pressure, decreased urine output and mild edema etc. A report from China reveals that 10-20% of IgAN present as Nephrotic Syndrome.

Only less than 10% of Berger’s Disease patients could complicate with acute renal failure, and most of them are accompanied with gross hematuria and backache.

High blood pressure attacks commonly in patients with IgA Nephropathy. Its incidence rate of hypertension increases along with one’s illness course. The morbidity of high blood pressure among patients with IgAN is 30-40% when the patients are over 40 years old. Only small amount of IgAN patients could develop malignant hypertension and result in malignant arteriolar nephrosclerosis and acute renal failure etc. From a report before, about 16-20% of IgA Nephropathy patients experience malignant hypertension and acute renal failure. Among those patients, their survival rate is less than 10% within 18 months which is called malignant IgAN.

About 10-20% of patients with Berger’s Disease progresses to chronic renal failure within 10 years. That is to say, 1-2% patients with IgAN would end up with chronic renal failure per year.
