Causes of Excessive Urine Output with Kidney Disease

2013-03-18 08:30

What are the causes of excessive urine output with kidney disease? In some instances, the excessive urine output can be a sign of a serious problem. It can indicate that the kidneys are malfunctioning.

For example, substances build up in the tubules of the kidneys, interfering with the reabsorption of water and causing an elevated level of water in the bloodstream which in turn causes the kidneys to increase urine output, and we call this osmotic diuresis.

In rebound diuresis, patients produce excessive urine output as they recover from renal failure. It can also be caused by exposure to cold or prolonged submersion, in which case it is known as immersion diuresis, as the body constricts blood vessels to conserve heat, leading the kidneys to produce more urine.

Also, generally speaking, at the early stage of Hypertensive Nephropathy, Diabetic Nephropathy or Acute Renal Failure, patients may experience the excessive urine output. Kidney disease experts warn patients that the treatment for these illness condition should not aim at relieving some symptoms, but controlling the primary disease (high blood pressure or Diabetes), repairing kidney damage and enhancing kidney function. In that case, these conditions can be prevented developing Chronic Renal Failure. Once Chronic Renal Failure appears, patients would experience the decreased urine output, which is because the kidney function is kept losing. Doctors will recommend dialysis or kidney transplant when the condition develops stage 5 chronic kidney disease, we can also call it End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD).

So patients should take the treatment timely when they are experiencing excessive urine output, not the decreased urine output. Even though the reduced kidney function can be enhanced, there has a certain difficulty. Have your doctor told you the primary disease causing excessive urine output?
