Minimal Change Nephropathy: Prognosis and Treatment

2013-01-27 08:40

Minimal Change Nephropathy, which usually occurs in children, roughly accounts for 75% of children nephritic syndrome and 15% of adult nephritic syndrome. Since it is common, many people are eager to know the prognosis of Minimal Change Nephropathy and treatment of Minimal Change Nephropathy. In view of this, here we will expound it in detail.

Corticosteroid is always used to treat Minimal Change Nephropathy. Before corticosteroid was found, the mortality of children with minimal change in 5 years was about 50%, while 25%~40% of these children can be spontaneous remission with time. Since corticosteroid such as prednisone is used, the mortality reduces largely. Generally, the younger patients, the better prognosis of Minimal Change Nephropathy is.

To the patients with proteinuria, some immunosuppressive agents are also necessary, because corticosteroid may not eliminate proteinuria effectively. However, both of corticosteroid and immunosuppressive agents have some side effects, especially to the children. If the patients’ condition is more likely to relapse or they may be addictive to these medicines. In this situation, CyA may also be prescribed to help treat Minimal Change Nephropathy. Usually, patients’ condition can be alleviated completely and then they can reduce the dose of corticosteroid. It means the prognosis of Minimal Change Nephropathy is good if it can be remitted only depending on these medicines.

If the above treatment of Minimal Change Nephropathy can’t play their role very well, patients should pay attention to the following tips:

◆ Detect and treat the infected lesion, especially the occult ones.

◆ Take CT test immediately if renal venous thrombosis forms and adopt the relative treatment.

◆ Pay attention to focal glomerulosclerosis as corticosteroid doesn’t work.

◆ Make sure you have consulted your doctor before stopping or reducing the dose of any medicine.

In general, the treatment of Minimal Change Nephropathy can play its role very well and the prognosis of Minimal Change Nephropathy is also very well. If your condition is not very well, you can try some other treatment after analyzing condition carefully.
