2013-05-23 11:48

Does Baking Soda Affect Blood Pressure for Person with PKDBaking soda has a wide use in your daily life from cleaning products to baking foods and work for medical use. However, if you happen to be a

PKD person with high blood pressure, it is better for you to know the effect of baking soda in your health.

Baking Soda

Baking soda mainly consists of there elements, namely, carbon, sodium and hydrogen. According to the research, 1 teaspoon baking soda contains about 1g sodium. Due to rich in sodium, baking soda is not a good choice for patients with Kidney Disease or High Blood Pressure.

Backing Soda and PKD Patients with Hypertension

As mentioned above, backing soda is high in sodium, which makes it a bad choice for patients with PKD and hypertension. Sodium has natural ability to “lock” fluids. In other words, water tends to follow sodium. As a result, the sodium foods can help make more fluid into blood circulation, causing high blood pressure.

In addition, sodium foods will cause the risk to develop edema--another common symptoms of Kidney Disease.

Both of high blood pressure and edema will make the kidney damage worse and decrease kidney function. Thereby, backing soda is not suggested for patients with PKD.

Patients with PKD and High Blood Pressure are suggested to take a low sodium Diet. Here are some common suggestion about how to maintain a low sodium diet for your information.

- Buy fresh, plain frozen, or canned "with no salt added" vegetables.

- Choose ready-to-eat breakfast cereals that are lower in sodium.

- Cook rice, pasta, and hot cereals without salt. Cut back on instant or flavored rice, pasta, and cereal mixes, which usually have added salt.

- When available, buy low- or reduced-sodium, or no-salt-added versions of foods.
